June 18

Autistic Pride Day

A day created by and for autistic people to celebrate autistic identity, culture, and community. Unlike awareness campaigns organized by non-autistic people, Autistic Pride Day centers autistic voices and the neurodiversity perspective.

History

Autistic Pride Day was established in 2005 by Aspies For Freedom, an autistic civil rights organization. The date — June 18 — was chosen deliberately. The infinity rainbow symbol, adopted by many autistic people and neurodiversity advocates, represents the diversity and complexity of the autistic experience.

How to Participate

  • Learn about neurodiversity and the autistic civil rights movement
  • Amplify autistic voices on social media — share posts written by autistic people
  • Celebrate autistic culture, art, music, and writing
  • Reflect on the difference between pride and tragedy framings of autism
  • Support autistic community spaces and self-advocacy organizations
