National Disability Employment Awareness Month

A US observance recognizing the contributions of workers with disabilities and the importance of inclusive employment. Autistic adults face significant employment barriers — unemployment rates among autistic adults remain disproportionately high.

History

Congress established NDEAM in 1945, originally as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. It was expanded to a full month in 1988. The US Department of Labor coordinates NDEAM activities.

How to Participate

  • Review your organization's disability inclusion practices in hiring and retention
  • Learn about autism-specific employment support programs
  • Advocate for workplace accommodations as a right, not a favor
  • Support companies with genuine autism inclusion hiring programs
  • Amplify the voices of autistic employees and job seekers
