Sensory Processing Awareness Month

A month raising awareness of sensory processing differences — a hallmark feature of autism. Understanding sensory processing helps families, educators, and employers create environments where autistic people can function at their best.

History

Sensory Processing Awareness Month has been promoted by occupational therapy communities and sensory processing advocacy organizations. October was chosen to align with other disability awareness months.

How to Participate

  • Learn about the eight sensory systems — not just the traditional five
  • Create a sensory-friendly space in your home, classroom, or workplace
  • Understand that sensory needs are not preferences — they are neurological realities
  • Advocate for sensory accommodations in schools and public spaces
  • Explore sensory profiles and what they mean for daily life planning
