Better Hearing and Speech Month

A month recognizing the importance of communication and the professionals who support it — particularly relevant to the autism community, where speech-language pathologists play a central role in communication support.

History

Better Hearing and Speech Month has been recognized in May since 1927, organized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). It is one of the longest-running public health awareness observances in the US.

How to Participate

  • Learn about the range of communication approaches beyond traditional speech therapy
  • Understand the difference between speech therapy focused on function vs. normalization
  • Advocate for communication support that builds on a child's natural communication style
  • Explore AAC as a legitimate and effective communication support
  • Support autistic people's right to communicate in the way that works for them
