April 2

World Autism Acceptance Day

A United Nations-designated day to promote understanding and acceptance of autistic people worldwide. While it began as an awareness day, many advocates now use it to center acceptance and autistic voices rather than awareness campaigns.

History

The UN designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in 2007. Many autism advocacy organizations and autistic self-advocates have since reframed it as World Autism Acceptance Day, reflecting the growing consensus that awareness without action is insufficient.

How to Participate

  • Share resources from autistic-led organizations
  • Donate to organizations with autistic leadership and board members
  • Host a conversation in your school, workplace, or community about what acceptance means in practice
  • Read firsthand accounts from autistic people about what they want from allies
  • Avoid 'light it up blue' campaigns — ask why many autistic advocates oppose them
