World Voice Day

A global day celebrating the human voice in all its forms — including alternative forms of voice and communication used by autistic people. AAC, text-to-speech, and other communication tools are voices too.

History

World Voice Day began in Brazil in 1999 and became a global observance by 2002. It is promoted by the American Academy of Otolaryngology. The autism community has embraced it as a day to affirm all forms of communication as valid voices.

How to Participate

  • Affirm that AAC is a real voice — not a lesser form of communication
  • Learn about text-to-speech technology and how it supports autistic communicators
  • Support autistic self-advocates who communicate through writing, art, or AAC
  • Challenge the idea that speech is the only valid or real form of communication
  • Celebrate the diversity of communication in your family or community
