AUTISM GLOSSARY
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)
DEFINITION
AAC refers to any method of communication used to supplement or replace natural speech. It ranges from low-tech (picture boards, PECS, sign language) to high-tech (speech-generating devices and apps like Proloquo2Go, TouchChat, and Snap Core First).
WHY IT MATTERS
AAC is not a last resort. It supports communication for nonspeaking and minimally speaking autistic people and those who are beginning communicators. Research consistently shows that AAC supports — not hinders — speech development.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
Using AAC does not prevent speech from developing. Autistic people who use AAC have the right to communicate however works for them. AAC is a legitimate communication system, not a consolation prize.
