AUTISM GLOSSARY

BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst)

DEFINITION

A BCBA is a professional certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to practice applied behavior analysis. BCBAs design, supervise, and evaluate ABA programs.

WHY IT MATTERS

BCBAs are the primary providers of ABA therapy for autistic children. The quality and approach vary enormously between practitioners. Knowing what questions to ask helps families evaluate whether a given BCBA's approach aligns with their values.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

BCBA certification does not indicate a particular therapeutic philosophy. BCBAs range from compliance-focused to neurodiversity-affirming in their approaches.
