AUTISM GLOSSARY

Co-occurring Conditions

DEFINITION

Co-occurring conditions are diagnoses that exist alongside autism. Common co-occurring conditions include ADHD, anxiety disorder, OCD, depression, epilepsy, dyspraxia, hypermobility, GI issues, sleep disorders, and ARFID.

WHY IT MATTERS

Most autistic people have at least one co-occurring condition. Understanding these conditions separately from autism allows for targeted, appropriate support.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Co-occurring conditions are not symptoms of autism. They are separate diagnoses that require separate assessment and treatment, even though they frequently appear together.
