AUTISM GLOSSARY

IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)

DEFINITION

IDEA is the federal law that governs special education in the United States. It guarantees eligible children with disabilities the right to FAPE, an IEP, and education in the LRE. It covers children from birth through age 21.

WHY IT MATTERS

IDEA establishes the rights that families rely on for appropriate educational support. Understanding it gives families legal standing to advocate for their children.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

IDEA does not apply to colleges and universities. Post-secondary rights for students with disabilities fall under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
