AUTISM GLOSSARY

Identity-First Language

DEFINITION

Identity-first language places the identity word first: 'autistic person' rather than 'person with autism.' It reflects the view that autism is a core part of who someone is — not an add-on separate from their identity.

WHY IT MATTERS

Most autistic adults who have stated a preference prefer identity-first language. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) and most autistic-led organizations use identity-first language.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Identity-first language is not insensitive. Many autistic people find person-first language condescending — as if autism is something shameful to be distanced from. The individual's preference always takes priority.
