AUTISM GLOSSARY
Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)
DEFINITION
RSD is an intense emotional response to perceived rejection, criticism, failure, or teasing. It is common in ADHD and increasingly recognized in autistic people. The emotional pain of RSD is described as overwhelming and out of proportion by those experiencing it.
WHY IT MATTERS
RSD affects relationships, school, and work significantly. Understanding it helps separate the emotional intensity from the trigger — the emotional response is neurological, not character.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
RSD is not oversensitivity or immaturity. The emotional pain is physiologically real and intense. 'Just toughen up' is not a useful response to a neurological experience.
