AUTISM GLOSSARY

Social Stories

DEFINITION

Social Stories, developed by Carol Gray, are short narratives that describe social situations, events, or concepts in a structured format designed to help autistic people understand social expectations and contexts.

WHY IT MATTERS

Social Stories can help autistic people prepare for new situations, understand others' perspectives, and navigate social expectations that are not intuitive. They are most effective when tailored to the individual.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Social Stories are not about making autistic people conform to neurotypical norms. At their best, they help autistic people understand situations so they can make their own informed decisions.
