AUTISM GLOSSARY

Special Interest

DEFINITION

A special interest is a topic, activity, or subject that an autistic person engages with at an intense, focused level. Special interests are often highly detailed, bring significant joy and comfort, and can become areas of deep expertise.

WHY IT MATTERS

Special interests are a source of identity, joy, regulation, and connection. They are not symptoms to manage. Many autistic people build careers, friendships, and meaning around their special interests.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Special interests are often dismissed as obsessions or fixations. They are not pathological. Sharing a special interest is one of the primary ways many autistic people connect with others.
