AUTISM GLOSSARY

Augmentative Communication

DEFINITION

Augmentative communication refers to any approach that supplements existing communication abilities. It encompasses the full range of AAC — from gestures and picture boards to sophisticated speech-generating devices — used alongside whatever natural communication is present.

WHY IT MATTERS

Augmentative communication affirms that communication exists on a continuum. Adding AAC to someone's communication repertoire does not replace what is already there — it adds to it.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Augmentative communication is not a sign of failure. It is a recognition that communication needs support — just as glasses augment vision without replacing it.
